What Is Estate & Terminal Tax Return?
A terminal or final tax return is the income tax return filed for a person who has died. In Canada, the legal representative generally files the deceased person’s final T1 return to report income and relevant tax information up to the date of death.
Depending on the circumstances, additional tax filings may also be required. For example, an estate may need to file a T3 Trust Income Tax and Information Return for income earned by the estate after the date of death. Certain optional T1 returns may also be available for eligible income.
The exact filing requirements depend on the deceased person’s financial circumstances, date of death, assets, income and estate activities.
Every estate is unique. Clear guidance helps prevent costly filing oversights.
